Baby Car Seats in Sri Lanka

Car seats are grouped by your child's approximate age and weight, not a fixed birthday, because children grow at different rates. Stage 0/Infant (Group 0): rear-facing only, newborns up to roughly 13kg (birth to about 12–15 months) — carrier-style seats that click in and out of a base. Stage 1 (Group 1): rear- or forward-facing, roughly 9–18kg (about 9 months to 4 years). Stage 2/3 (Group 2/3): forward-facing with harness transitioning to booster, roughly 15–36kg (about 4 to 12 years). All-in-one/360° Group 0+1/2/3 seats cover birth to around 36kg in a single rotating seat, costing more upfront but often cheaper over the years since you don't repurchase as your child grows.

As a general guide, always confirm against the specific seat's weight limit since that matters more than age. Newborn–12 months: rear-facing infant carrier or the rear-facing setting on a convertible seat, since a baby's neck and spine can't yet handle frontal crash forces facing forward. 1–4 years: stay rear-facing as long as the seat allows, then switch to forward-facing with a 5-point harness once outgrown — there's no rush to switch early. 4–6 years: forward-facing harnessed seat, or a combination seat converting to booster around 18kg+. 6–12 years: booster seat with the car's adult seatbelt positioned across the shoulder and hip, not the neck or stomach. Around 12+ or 135–150cm tall: most children are ready for the adult seatbelt alone once it fits properly without a booster. If your child is between sizes, weight and size limits matter more than age.

Keep them rear-facing for as long as the seat allows. Rear-facing distributes crash forces across the back and shoulders instead of the neck, which matters most while a child's spine is still developing. Many convertible and 360° seats now support rear-facing up to 18–25kg, well beyond the old 12-months rule of thumb, so check your specific seat's weight limit rather than assuming you must switch at your child's first birthday.

Both are safe when installed correctly, but ISOFIX has a practical edge: it clips directly into fixed anchor points built into your car, giving a rigid, consistent connection with little room for installation error. Seatbelt installation is more flexible (works in almost any car, including older models without ISOFIX points) but is more sensitive to getting the belt routing exactly right — incorrect belt threading is one of the most common car seat mistakes. There's currently no specific law in Sri Lanka mandating car seat use for children, unlike many other countries. That said, car seats significantly reduce the risk of serious injury in a crash regardless of what the law requires, which is why we — and paediatricians globally — recommend using an appropriately staged seat for every car journey, not just when required to.

Most car seats have a usable lifespan of around 6–10 years from the manufacture date (check the sticker on the seat itself, not the purchase date), since the plastic shell gradually degrades with heat and UV exposure even if it looks fine. Beyond the seat's own expiry, your child moves through stages by weight and height, finishing with the adult seatbelt alone once they're tall enough for it to fit properly without a booster.

We'd advise caution. A secondhand seat's crash history often isn't known — a seat that's been in even a minor collision can have invisible structural damage — and older seats may not meet current safety standards or could be missing parts or instructions. A 360° rotating seat lets you spin the seat toward the car door to load and unload your child, then rotate it back to the correct rear- or forward-facing position for driving, instead of leaning awkwardly across a fixed seat. It's a convenience feature rather than a safety one, but it's popular with parents doing multiple daily trips, and most of our 360° models also span a wider weight range (Group 0+1/2/3), so you may not need to repurchase a new seat as your child grows.

ISOFIX compatibility depends on your car having ISOFIX anchor points (standard on most cars made after the mid-2000s, but worth checking on older or imported vehicles). Seatbelt-installed seats are more universally compatible but vary in how well they fit different seat shapes.
