What age is an inflatable pool safe for?
Inflatable pools can be used from around 1 year old with appropriate supervision, but children aged 1–4 are actually the highest-risk age group for drowning, including in shallow water, because it takes very little water and very little time for a drowning incident to occur. Age suitability depends far more on supervision than on the pool itself.
Do I really need to supervise my child even in a small inflatable pool?
Yes, always, with no exceptions for pool size. For children aged 1–4, this should be "touch supervision" — an adult within arm's reach at all times, not just present in the yard. For older children, active, undistracted supervision is still needed; a good habit is assigning one adult as the dedicated "water watcher" whose only job is watching the pool, with no phone, chores, or conversation as distractions.
Are pool floats, armbands, or noodles enough to keep my child safe?
No — inflatable floats, armbands, rings, and noodles are toys, not safety equipment, and should never be relied on as a substitute for direct supervision or a properly fitted, certified life jacket. They can deflate, slip off, or flip a child face-down without warning.
How much water should I fill the pool with?
Keep water shallow — just enough for splashing and sitting, particularly for toddlers and young children. Check your specific pool model's recommended fill line, and always supervise regardless of depth.
Should I drain the pool after each use?
Yes. Never leave standing water in an inflatable or plastic pool when it's not actively being supervised and used — this removes an unsupervised drowning risk for younger children or toddlers who may wander to it, and also prevents mosquito breeding, a genuine concern in Sri Lanka's climate.
How do I look after an inflatable pool in hot weather?
Air inside the pool's chambers expands in direct heat, which can put excess pressure on the seams. In hot, sunny weather, release a little air to relieve that pressure, and avoid over-inflating or forcefully pulling the material when setting it up, since this can cause leaks or damage.
