Kids' Bicycles in Sri Lanka

Getting the size right matters more than the age on the box — a bike that's too big is genuinely harder and less safe for a child to control than one that's slightly small. We stock 12", 16", and 20" wheel sizes from Tomahawk, Kenstar, and Arrow. Use the FAQ below to find the right fit by height, not just age, then call or WhatsApp 0711771111 if you're still unsure — we're happy to talk through your child's height and riding experience before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions — Bicycles

How do I pick the right bicycle size for my child?
Height and inseam matter far more than age, since kids of the same age can vary by several centimetres. As a general guide: 12-inch wheels suit roughly 90–97cm tall, typically under 4 years old, usually their first pedal bike after a balance bike. 16-inch wheels suit roughly 97–122cm tall, typically ages 5–7. 20-inch wheels suit roughly 122–150cm tall, typically ages 7–13, and usually the first size without training wheels as standard. The most reliable check: with your child seated on the saddle, the balls of their feet should comfortably touch the ground.
Should my child use a balance bike or training wheels first?
Both work, but they teach different skills. A balance bike (no pedals) teaches balance and steering first, which many children pick up faster and more confidently than starting with training wheels, since training wheels can delay learning true balance. If your child is moving from a balance bike, they often transition straight to a two-wheeler without needing training wheels at all. If starting fresh on a pedal bike, training wheels are a reasonable option, typically removed once your child shows confidence steering and stopping.
When should I size up to the next wheel size?
When your child's knees start coming up noticeably high while pedalling, or the saddle is at its highest setting and their legs are still cramped, it's time to size up — don't wait for them to fully outgrow a bike, since a too-small bike is both uncomfortable and harder to control safely.
What safety gear does my child need?
A properly fitted helmet is essential every time, regardless of distance or how confident your child feels. Knee and elbow pads are recommended for beginners still building balance and confidence, especially on paved or uneven surfaces.
Do the bikes come with hand brakes or foot brakes?
This varies by size and model — smaller bikes (12-16 inch) more commonly use foot/coaster brakes, which suit younger children's grip strength and coordination, while larger bikes may include hand brakes. Check the specific product listing, and ask us if brake type matters for your child's age and experience.
How do I maintain a kids' bicycle?
Check tyre pressure and brake function regularly, especially if the bike is used outdoors on Sri Lankan pavements, which can be uneven. Keep the chain lightly oiled and free of dust buildup, and periodically check that the saddle and handlebar bolts haven't loosened with use.
Do you deliver bicycles islandwide, and are they pre-assembled?
We deliver islandwide within 1–5 days. Assembly requirements vary by model — check the specific product listing, or ask us directly and we'll confirm what's needed before your bike arrives.
