Pacifiers & Teethers in Sri Lanka

Pacifiers and teethers aren't one-size-fits-all-ages products — the right shape, size, and firmness changes as your baby grows, and knowing when (and how) to wean off matters just as much as picking the right one to start with. We stock the full range across all stages from trusted brands including Farlin, Philips Avent, and Tommee Tippee. Full guidance on stages, weaning, and safety in the FAQ below.

Frequently Asked Questions — Pacifiers & Teethers

What are the pacifier age stages, and why does it matter which one I pick?
Pacifiers are sized to a baby's growing mouth and jaw, typically in three stages: 0–6 months, 6–18 months, and 18 months+. Using a stage that's too small can be a choking risk as your baby grows, while one that's too large may not seat comfortably or soothe effectively for a younger baby. Check the stage marked on the product before buying, and re-check every few months as your baby grows.
Is it true that pacifiers can help reduce SIDS risk?
Pacifier use during naptime and bedtime has been associated with a reduced risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in infants, particularly in the first six months, according to paediatric guidance. This is general safe-sleep guidance rather than a substitute for other safe sleep practices (back sleeping, firm mattress, clear crib) — if you have specific concerns, it's worth discussing with your paediatrician.
When should I start weaning my child off the pacifier?
Recommendations vary slightly by source, but a common window is starting to wean between 6–12 months, when the natural sucking reflex begins to diminish and pacifier use becomes more habit than biological need, with most guidance recommending pacifiers be phased out somewhere between age 2 and 3 at the latest. Continued use much past age 2–3 is more commonly linked to dental alignment issues and, in some cases, speech development concerns.
What's the risk of using a pacifier for too long?
The two most commonly cited concerns are dental effects (misaligned teeth from prolonged sucking pressure) and a possible link to speech delay with extended use past the toddler years. Frequent pacifier use past 6 months has also been associated with a higher rate of middle ear infections in some studies. None of this means an occasional pacifier is harmful — it's specifically prolonged, all-day use well past the toddler years that's the concern.
What's a one-piece pacifier design, and why does it matter?
A one-piece pacifier is molded from a single piece of silicone with no separate parts, versus older multi-piece designs with a separate shield, nipple, and ring. One-piece designs remove the risk of a part detaching and becoming a choking hazard, and they're also easier to clean thoroughly since there's no seam for water or milk residue to collect in. We'd recommend a one-piece design for this reason, particularly for younger babies.
How do I sterilise a pacifier, and how often?
Before first use, sterilise by boiling, steam sterilising, or using a sterilising solution or tablet per the manufacturer's instructions. After that, a thorough wash in warm soapy water between uses is generally sufficient for daily use, with periodic re-sterilising, though check your specific pacifier brand's care guidance.
What material is safest — silicone or latex?
Both are used safely in baby products, but they differ: silicone is more durable, doesn't degrade as quickly with heat or sterilising, and is naturally hypoallergenic, which is why most modern pacifiers use it. Latex is softer and more like a natural nipple feel, but degrades faster and isn't suitable for babies with a latex allergy. Look for pacifiers explicitly labelled BPA-free regardless of material.
When should I introduce a teether, and what should I look for?
Teethers are generally introduced once early teething signs appear (drooling, gum rubbing, chewing on hands), often starting around 3–4 months even before the first tooth erupts, though this varies by baby. Look for BPA-free materials, no small detachable parts, and a size or shape your baby can grip without it being a choking risk — larger, one-piece designs are generally safest for younger babies.
