Frequently Asked Questions — Playmats
How thick should a baby playmat be?
For quiet play on the back, around 1cm is generally enough. For tummy time and active crawling, look for at least 1.2–2cm — this gives noticeably better cushioning against hard floors like tile or laminate, which is especially useful during the wobbly first-steps stage.
What's the difference between foam tiles and a fabric mat?
Foam tiles (usually high-density EVA foam) interlock together, are waterproof and easy to wipe clean, and let you resize the play area or replace a single damaged tile without buying a whole new mat. Fabric mats feel softer and blend in better with living-room decor, often with a removable, machine-washable cover — the main thing to watch is drying it properly afterward, since damp fabric can develop a musty smell.
Does foam density actually matter, or is thickness enough?
Density matters as much as thickness. A thick mat made from low-density foam can still compress flat under a baby's weight within a few weeks and end up feeling hard underneath despite looking cushioned. Higher-density EVA foam (roughly 80–120 kg/m³) holds its shape and cushioning far longer.
Are foam playmats safe and non-toxic?
Quality foam mats are made from EVA foam manufactured to meet international toy safety standards, and are generally lightweight, flexible, and free of the harsher chemicals found in lower-grade foams. As with any product your baby will spend time on and put in their mouth, it's worth checking for a genuine safety certification rather than assuming all foam mats are equal.
